Intelligems Review: The Honest Verdict on Shopify Price Testing

Intelligems Review: The Honest Verdict on Shopify Price Testing

Intelligems is the most capable price testing app on Shopify. Whether it is right for your store comes down to one number: how many orders you do a month. Get that number wrong and you can pay 499 a month to watch a test that never reaches an answer.

So here is the review I wish existed when I was running a store. What Intelligems actually does, what each plan really costs, the traffic you need before price testing tells you anything true, and the honest cases where a cheaper tool, or no live test at all, is the better call.

What Intelligems actually does

Intelligems is an A/B testing app built for Shopify. It splits your live traffic, shows different versions of your store to different shoppers, and measures which version makes more money. Where most conversion apps stop at button colours and headlines, Intelligems goes after the levers that move margin: product prices, shipping rates and free-shipping thresholds, discounts and offers, on-site content and themes, checkout content, and combinations of all of the above.

The feature that separates it from the pack is the analytics. Intelligems reports on profit, not just conversion rate or revenue. You load in your cost of goods, and it tracks profit per visitor across the test, so a variant that lifts conversion but quietly destroys margin gets caught rather than celebrated. That is the right way to measure a price test, and very few tools in this space do it natively. One caveat that rides along with it: that profit read is only as honest as the cost numbers behind it. If your cost of goods is stale, or it leaves out freight and returns, profit per visitor comes back confidently wrong, so get that data clean before you trust a verdict.

It launched in December 2021, it is based in New York, and it holds a 4.7 rating across more than 160 reviews on the Shopify App Store, where the recurring praise is fast setup and genuinely responsive support over a shared Slack channel. There is also a newer AI helper, Atlas, for ideating and reading tests. The product is well built and actively developed. None of that is in question. The question is fit.

Intelligems pricing, in plain terms

Intelligems publishes four tiers. All prices below are in US dollars, they scale with your sitewide order volume, and annual billing takes roughly 25 per cent off. There is a 14-day free trial on any plan. These are the entry figures from the Intelligems pricing page; confirm your own number, because it moves with your orders.

PlanFrom (per month)What it unlocksWho it suits
Core Redirect49URL redirect tests only, capped at 2 concurrent tests, under 3,000 ordersTesting whole-page variants on the cheap
Core79Content, themes, templates, copy, offers and discounts, analyticsCRO and content testing
Plus499Everything in Core, plus price testing, shipping rates and thresholdsPrice and margin testing
Blue999Everything in Plus, plus combination tests, subscription prices, multi-currencyComplex, bespoke experimentation

Read that table with one thing in mind. Almost everyone who searches for Intelligems is there for price testing, and price testing lives on the Plus plan at 499 a month. If you only want to test content, headlines and offers, the Core plan at 79 does that and you never need to think about 499. The moment you want to test an actual price, you are on the Plus tier, and the bill climbs as your order volume grows.

One myth worth killing while we are here: you do not need Shopify Plus. Standard Shopify stores run Intelligems price tests through Shopify Functions, and Shopify Plus stores can use checkout scripts instead. Only specific checkout-page changes, such as editing checkout content or post-purchase pages, actually require Shopify Plus, per the Intelligems documentation. So the platform requirement is not the blocker. Your traffic is.

The one number that decides whether Intelligems works for you

This is the part that quietly stops some stores buying, and it belongs before the free trial, not after.

A live price test only gives you a trustworthy answer once each variant has collected enough conversions to be statistically significant. Below that threshold you are not reading a result, you are reading noise, and noise will happily tell you to raise your prices right before your revenue falls off a cliff.

So how much traffic is enough? Plug realistic numbers into Evan Miller’s sample-size calculator, the tool most practitioners use, and the answer is sobering. Start from a 3 per cent conversion rate, which sits right in the typical Shopify range of 2 to 3 per cent. To detect whether a new price shifted conversion by 10 per cent, you need traffic in this region:

Change you want to detectVisitors per variant (approx)What that looks like
20 per cent (a big, obvious price move)~14,000Reachable for most stores in weeks
10 per cent (a normal price move)~50,000~100,000 visitors total per test
5 per cent (a subtle move)~200,000Months of traffic for a single read

Those numbers are per variant, so double them for a simple two-way test. A 10 per cent read needs around 100,000 visitors in total, which at a 3 per cent conversion rate is roughly 3,000 orders spread across the test. A store doing 30,000 visits a month is looking at about three months for one clean result, and longer for anything subtler. Test a genuinely large price gap and you get there faster. Test the kind of small, sensible price change most brands actually want to make, and you may be waiting a quarter for each answer.

There is a trap inside that wait, too. Do not stop the test the moment it flashes significant. Peeking at an A/B test and calling it as soon as you like the number is one of the most common ways to fool yourself, because with enough looks almost any test crosses the line by chance. Pick your sample size in advance and let it run.

Here is the rule of thumb worth writing down: under roughly 3,000 orders a month, a normal 10 per cent price move will not resolve inside a quarter, so the Plus plan is buying you a test you cannot finish in good time. Now hold that next to the pricing. Price testing sits behind the 499 plan, but the stores that can reach significance quickly are the high-volume ones for whom 499 a month is a rounding error. The smaller stores that feel 499 most are the ones least able to get a clean read from it. That is the real tension in this purchase, and it is worth sitting with before you start the trial.

What Intelligems is genuinely great at

For the right store, it is excellent, and I would not use anything else.

If you are doing meaningful order volume and you want to test price, shipping and margin on real buyers spending real money, live testing is the strongest evidence there is. There is no survey gap between what people say and what they do, because they are doing it. Intelligems is the most complete tool for that job on Shopify, and the profit-per-visitor analytics mean you are optimising for the number that pays your wages rather than a vanity conversion rate.

Shipping-threshold testing deserves a special mention, because finding the free-shipping bar that lifts average order value without eating your margin is often the single most profitable test a store can run, and Intelligems does it cleanly. By its own account the platform has tested more than 500 million in GMV and says over 95 per cent of brands find a more profitable price within three tests. Those are its figures rather than independent ones, but they match the pattern I see: once a high-volume store starts profit testing, it rarely stops.

Setup is genuinely quick, a single integration rather than a rebuild, and the support reputation is well earned. For an eight-figure DTC brand, Intelligems is close to a default.

Where Intelligems falls short

The honest limitations are the mirror image of the strengths.

The cost gate is real. Price testing starts at 499 a month and rises with order volume, which is a lot for a smaller store to justify against tests that take months to resolve.

The traffic requirement is the big one, covered above. If you are not doing the volume, no amount of software fixes the maths.

A subtler trap sits right next to it: a price test only tells the truth when nothing else is moving. Run one over a sitewide sale, a heavy email push or a Black Friday spike, and it is the promotion, not the price, that your data is reading. Keep price tests clear of the promo calendar, or you will confidently learn the wrong thing.

Then there is a subtler limit that even well-funded brands run into. Intelligems optimises within the prices you give it. It will tell you that 39 beat 42, if those are the two you chose to test. It will not tell you that the market would happily have paid 49, because you never put 49 in front of anyone. Live A/B testing is an optimiser, not a discovery tool, and if your starting range is wrong, it optimises you to the best of a bad set of options. This is exactly where methods like Gabor-Granger and Van Westendorp pricing research earn their place, because they map the whole demand curve rather than comparing two guesses.

Finally, a fairness point worth taking seriously. Price testing means different shoppers see different prices for the same product at the same time. Done as randomised experimentation, that is legitimate and standard practice, and it is not the same as the individualised, data-driven pricing that regulators have started scrutinising: the FTC’s 2025 surveillance pricing study is about setting prices from a person’s browsing and location data, which is a different thing entirely. But a customer who finds out they paid more than a friend will not care about the distinction. So honour the lower price if someone asks, keep test windows short, and think twice before running price tests on loyal repeat buyers who will notice.

Optimise versus discover: the distinction that saves you money

The mistake I see most often is treating a live A/B tool as a way to answer a question it was never built for.

There are two separate jobs. Discovering roughly what your market will pay is one. Proving which specific price wins on live traffic is the other. Intelligems is superb at the second and cannot do the first. If you already know your price should sit somewhere between 35 and 45 and you want to find the exact winner, run it live. If you are staring at a new product with no idea whether it is a 25 item or a 60 item, a live test will burn weeks narrowing a range you could have mapped in days.

For that first job, a pre-spend read is the cheaper path. Before you have the traffic to run a valid live test, or before you spend a quarter of live revenue testing the wrong range, you get a directional read on willingness to pay, use it to pick the two or three price points actually worth testing, and then validate the winner on live traffic. That sequence, test your audience assumptions first and confirm live second, is faster and less wasteful than either method alone.

This is the one place I will mention my own company, because it is the honest fit. With TestFeed you can put an in-context price in front of simulated shoppers and get back a purchase-intent read, their reasons in their own words, and a clear next move, in days rather than weeks. It is a pre-spend, directional signal, not a sales forecast and not a replacement for a live test when you have the volume to run one. Use it to choose which prices are worth Intelligems’ time, then let Intelligems prove the winner on real traffic. The two are complements, not rivals.

Intelligems alternatives, briefly and fairly

If Intelligems is not the fit, the honest shortlist depends on what you are testing. All figures are in US dollars and move often, so confirm on each vendor’s page.

ToolBest forPrice testing fromWatch-out
IntelligemsPrice and margin testing at volume499/mo (Plus)Cost gate, needs traffic
ShopliftTheme, template and section testing~299/mo (Advanced)Less depth on price than Intelligems
ABConvertValue price and shipping testing~199/moYounger product, smaller track record
ElevateA cheaper Intelligems-style toolLower tiersFewer advanced features
Convert or VWOEnterprise, cross-channel teamsEnterpriseOverkill for a single Shopify store

Two notes. Shopify’s own native experimentation is thin, and the first-party Shopify Smart Pricing app is an AI price-suggestion tool rather than a real A/B price-testing suite, so do not expect the platform to hand you this for free. And if you remember Google Optimize, it was retired in 2023, so any list still recommending it is out of date.

For live price and shipping testing on Shopify, Intelligems is the most complete option and, at scale, worth the money. ABConvert and Elevate compete mainly on price, and Shoplift wins if your real need is fast theme and content testing rather than price. Choose by the job in front of you, not the logo.

The verdict

Use Intelligems if you do meaningful order volume, you want to test price, shipping and margin on live traffic, and you care about profit rather than raw conversion. For that store it is the best tool in the category, and the profit-per-visitor analytics alone justify the plan.

Wait, or spend elsewhere, if you are low-volume and will not reach significance in a sensible window, if you only need content and layout testing, where Core at 79 or Shoplift will do the job for less, or if you do not yet know your price range, in which case a pre-spend read comes first.

Intelligems is excellent at proving which price wins on live traffic. Just make sure you have the traffic, and that you already know which prices are worth putting in front of it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Intelligems cost?

Intelligems has four tiers, all in US dollars and all scaling with your sitewide order volume: Core Redirect at 49 a month for URL redirect tests, Core at 79 for content, theme and offer testing, Plus at 499 for price and shipping testing, and Blue at 999 for combination, subscription and multi-currency tests. There is a 14-day free trial and roughly 25 per cent off annual plans.

Does Intelligems require Shopify Plus?

No. Price testing works on standard Shopify stores through Shopify Functions, while Shopify Plus stores can use checkout scripts. Only certain checkout-page modifications, such as editing checkout content or post-purchase pages, need Shopify Plus.

Is Intelligems worth it?

For higher-volume stores testing price, shipping and margin on live traffic, yes. The profit-based analytics and native integration are the best in the category, and the plan pays for itself quickly if a test lifts profit per visitor. For low-traffic stores, or teams that only need content and layout testing, it is often more tool and more cost than the job requires.

How much traffic do you need for a price test?

Enough conversions per variant to reach statistical significance. Detecting a 10 per cent change in conversion on a 3 per cent baseline needs roughly 50,000 visitors per variant, about 100,000 in total. A big, obvious price difference needs far less. A subtle one can need four times as much.

What are the best Intelligems alternatives?

Shoplift for theme and template testing, ABConvert and Elevate for cheaper price and shipping testing, and Convert or VWO for enterprise teams running the same test across Shopify and a separate site. For discovering a price range before you test it live, willingness-to-pay research is a better first step than any live A/B tool.
